Become The Change The World Needs – Animal Extinction…So Go Humans

Guest Blog – Lynda Storey

A few months ago I received a review copy from the author of an astounding new book: War of the Whales, by Joshua Horwitz.

I had never met Josh, but he’d signed my petition against Navy sonar — and it turns out that he’d been researching and writing his book on the same topic for over six years.

War of the Whales blew me away. Now that it’s been published — just two days ago — I wanted to share this news with you, since I know how passionately you feel about this tragedy.

It’s powerfully written, and Josh shares my outrage and sorrow over the fate of helpless whales and dolphins. But most importantly, this book reveals the hidden truth behind the Navy’s war on whales and dolphins.

War of the Whales tells the true story that the Navy has been suppressing for decades. Josh spent years digging into classified Navy files and interviewing people involved in the Navy’s Marine Mammal Research Program all the way back to 1961! Retired Navy dolphin trainers — and even retired admirals — shared secrets of the program that have never before been reported. Finally, we know the true facts about Navy sonar and the mass stranding of whales and dolphins worldwide.

When I read this book, I was moved to tears understanding the depth of the suffering that this sonar has caused — I was outraged at what I read, and over-joyed that the truth about the Navy’s war on whales is finally out in the open. Only through knowing the truth can we find a way to end this slaughter!

I hope you’ll check out this book, and learn more at

Being a long-term activist, I was heartened to learn of the others who share my concern for whales & dolphins worldwide. One notable is Bob Woodward, the investigative reporter who broke the Watergate scandal so many years ago. He is a man of deep integrity and he calls War of the Whales: “A gripping, brilliantly told tale of the secret and deadly struggle between American national security and the kings of the ocean. At once thrilling and heartbreaking, this is a landmark book of deep, original reporting that could alter forever how we view our role as stewards of the seas.”

I’m hoping that news of this book will continue to spread, and that people everywhere will be reading War of the Whales this summer. It’s already popped up on lots of Best Books lists, including Amazon’s, where the Senior Book Editor wrote: “Joshua Horwitz is an exuberant storyteller, and this is a rare trifecta of a book: important, highly readable, and stunningly true.”

You can read an excerpt from this remarkable book at I hope you will. Through educating ourselves, and taking action, we can stop this catastrophe once and for all.
