Does Your Life Seem Like A Car Stuck In Traffic?
There are many ways the syndrome of being stuck in life is expressed. “My life seems in a rut, if I knew what to do I would do it.” “I am not sure what I want.” “I have done everything I can think of and nothing worked–same old, same old.” “How can I move past the ‘overwhelm’ and create what I want?”
These laments, regardless of the format, are unconscious limiting beliefs being expressed without connecting the dots of cause and effect. These laments are unnecessary, once you know how easy it is to make the right shift. Decide what you want (goal); take a risk and put your ideas into action. Put another way, launching your life is like driving a car. If you are stopped in a traffic lane watching the cars whiz by in the next lane you might think it is intimidating.
It seems that the other cars have the ‘right of way,’ while you are locked in a row of cars that are not moving. You also know that unless you take command of the situation you will be sitting in the stopped traffic for an undetermined length of time.
The key to solving this dilemma is fundamental. Take a risk. First Turn on the turn signal. This signals that you are intending to move into the flow of traffic moving past. The second step is to watch for a ‘gap’ in the traffic – if you miss one, another one will come. Then, confidently maneuver your car into the next lane. Oh, but, the cars are moving too fast. This is a limiting belief. You have as much right to be in that lane as anyone else. Your goal is to get out of the stopped lane and into the flow of traffic and continue to your destination. Once in the flowing traffic you are on your way. This is a big metaphor for your life.
While you are navigating your way on the highway through the driving challenges, you are challenging yourself to make decisions, taking risks and executing the steps. The point is that you need to take some risks in order to go where you want to go. You will find the best way to get there as you move through the steps toward your goal(s). You will handle what comes up as you encounter it.
It is paramount to avoid worrying about what you will encounter down the road because you can not know in advance – you need to trust your resilience and skills to handle the detours, road construction or results of someone’s unfortunate driving mishap. The same applies regarding your life.
Ironically, it does not matter what model car you drive. If it has four wheels, an engine, a battery, cylinders, steering wheel and gas, it will move you toward your destination. In life, it is the same. You do not need to be in the top of the line sports car with the super-duper paint finish before you begin driving. As long as the car is in running order to start it and build momentum you will figure it out as you go. You can take advantage of the opportunities that are passing by in every moment – there is no need to panic.
Do not judge your success by someone else’s success. Remember that you get to choose how you want to create your results. You are in the driver’s seat. You are in control of your destiny. The key is knowing that sitting in stopped traffic you are not taking control of the situation. If you believe there are more experienced drivers on the road and that is enough to hold you back from taking control, it is you holding yourself back; not the perceived ‘more experienced drivers.’
Thus, do not allow yourself to be deterred from taking action simply because you think you need more credentials or more accessories to make your car more maneuverable. Nor do you need a total map of the entire journey you will make with this car over the course of its lifetime.
Right now is the first moment of the rest of your life. Start your engine, start driving, trust yourself to figure out everything you need to know as you go. And last, but not least enjoy the ride to the goals in life you desire.
