Every Journey Has Challenges – Manage Them

‘Life is a journey – not a destination’ has become a cliché or buzz phrase. However, it carries a profound and poignant message. Every journey is challenging. The journey is what life is.

Every experience has its ups and downs. And sometimes the downs seem more convincing than the ups to the degree that some people have thoughts of quitting or quit in one aspect of their life or another.

Every person experiences the ups and downs different. What looks like failure or disappointment to one person might be what prompts another to have more enthusiasm or motivation to put in more effort. Some people think if only I had more money, a better car, a larger house, etc. I will have an easier life. While this may be true in some respects it is not in others. ‘There’ is no better than ‘here.’ When you are ‘there’ it then, becomes another ‘here’ and you simply seek another ‘there’ that will again look better than ‘here.’

Success is not created by someone who avoids all failure, but, by someone who absolutely refuses to quit. Those who create great successes play full out every day moment to moment without lamenting the pebbles or boulders on the road.

What is the definition of success? Each dictionary gives a slightly different definition. However, the true definition of success is determined by each person. The dictionary definition states that success is achieving a goal. Many people achieve their goals while committing terror, mayhem, chaos, and ill achieved wealth. Thus, it is important to include contributing something worthy, emotional and spiritual attainment and good use of financial gain in one’s goal achievement. Does your definition of success contribute to others? Is it just, moral and positive?

Needless to say, however you define success, you need to include internal qualities which drive true success. To achieve true success you need to develop your inner self, your character to stand firm in your integrity, your truth and your beliefs. True success is more a function of character than the intended goal achievement. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7 When you sacrifice integrity to attain a goal; you indeed will undoubtedly attained your goal, however, you will have failed at true success.

True success is attaining a goal with integrity, contributing to others, coupled with just, moral and positive actions. Furthermore, each goal is achieved in single actions step by step, thus, there is incremental success. When these single successful incremental actions are ignored or downplayed; true success seems bitter sweet, rather, than growing sweeter as progress is made toward the ultimate goal. As the cliché goes, Rome was not built in a day, and some Egyptologists believe it took approximately 80 years to construct the largest Pyramids. It is believed to have taken 10 years to build the track to hoist the blocks – a monumental success.

Record and celebrate your incremental successes, thus, making the journey more enjoyable and rewarding. As Thomas Edison said, ‘I know 100 ways how not to make the light bulb, I only need one way to make it work,” and of course, the rest is history.
