Everyone Has Creative Talent

Many people believe either one is born with creativity as part of their style/personality or not and that creativity is a ‘gift’ that some people are lucky enough to have. Tina Seelig, author of inGENIUS: A Crash Course on Creativity, and award-winning educator atStanfordUniversity,Palo Alto,CA, believes everyone is creative.

There are easy and pragmatic steps to learn to ignite your creative fire. You need to discover what captures your imagination and embrace it. You can use metaphors and analogies as you go about your day. Play a game with yourself to connect unfamiliar items together. It is similar to playing the game of merging couple’s names into one. Brangelina (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie). Beniffer (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez) TomKat (Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) are three of the most popular celebrity couples merged names.

Or comparing one thing with another, you discover fascinating parallels that open up a world of unique ideas. Connecting unexpected people, places, objects and ideas gives a huge boost to your imagination. No doubt you remember as a child putting silly words together or saying someone was eating a worm sandwich and laughing hysterically about it.

Another easy exercise to foster creativity is to arrange creative space, which leads to creative work. Pixar, launched by Steve Jobs, is behind mind-bendingly creative movies such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo. Mind-bending provides an example of how something silly and unrealistic can be made to seem believable. When developing creativity you need to build physical space that allows you to unleash your imagination.

Collaborating with a group can be very stimulating and effectively creative. However, the group needs to be composed of individuals who bring different perspectives, who respect different working styles and who are open to amicably resolve conflicts along the way. Steve Jobs was a highly effective leader at bringing creative collaborative groups together. Collaborative groups need to have a healthy dose of playfulness and willingness to park their egos at the door.

The style of developing creativity is unique to each person. If none of the above suggestions are of interest, there are many more to choose from or simply be creative and develop your unique style of developing your creativity. Creativity has four constants; creativity needs to have a large dose of fun, frivolity, time and space for creative juices to unfold. ###
