Irrational Feelings Follow Irrational Thoughts

Do you sometimes sense that your emotions are running ahead of you? A sense that your thoughts are subject to your heart and your intellect is lagging behind. You might seem compelled to act compulsively without regard to the consequences.

This might be due to your underlying feeling of anger and dissatisfaction with where you are in your life at the moment. Your best strategy is to improve your awareness of your thought patterns moment to moment. Step away from your desires and take a mental inventory of your thoughts for the past hour or so. Do a check list – Do you have shelter, food, income and social support? If the answer is, ‘yes,’ there is very little to be dissatisfied with in your life.

You might notice that your emotions have little to do with your situation. You will notice that your check list is concrete evidence that you are safe, nourished and warm. With this sense of safety you will see things for what they really are.

Examining your life realistically allows you to more easily manage your irrational thoughts and the emotions that follow. When you understand that sometimes your irrational thoughts trigger your emotions to run wild and cause you to act impulsively, you will see that you have the power to shift your thoughts to the truth of the matter.

When you accept that your irrational thoughts come from a search for satisfaction from things outside yourself and that you can never fill this need except from within, you will manage things with ease. As you understand your thought patterns and realize that everything in your life is as it needs to be as you process the now and move along, your irrational thoughts will recede into the distance. Recognizing your thought patterns and the emotions that follow will give you greater control of your emotions and therefore your life.
