Let Go Of Old Behavior – Embrace New Behavior
The juxtaposition of letting go of old patterns and behaviors and integrating new patterns and behaviors is sometimes a delicate process. The old patterns and behaviors need to vacate before one can bring in new patterns and behaviors. This process can seem like a part of oneself is dying before the new has come in. While the new is what one wants and yearns for, it is sometimes a challenging and precarious process.
Even though it is a natural and necessary part of your growth, it is sometimes painful, or if you are unaware of what is transpiring it can be confusing and disorienting. Confusion and disorientation are often the messengers that signal you that a shift is taking place within. These shifts transpire throughout one’s life. You move from infancy to childhood, adolescence and adulthood. With each transition from one phase to another, you might discover you say good-bye to some friends and the identity that you formed in order to move through that particular phase that no longer fits your new persona.
Sometimes you might form these identities in relationships or a job, thus, when you shift those areas of your life you become unsettled. Usually, when you take time to look into the changing surface of things, you will find that a shift is taking place without your recognizing it. For example, you may go through a period of your life creating a protective shell around yourself because you need it in order to heal from some earlier trauma.
Later, you find your Self feeling confined and restless, and being beckoned to move outside the shell you needed. The new part of your Self cannot be born within the confines of the shell you needed to survive then. You need to release that shell before you can embrace the new behavior.
You might feel a strange mixture of exhilaration and sadness as the part of you is slipping away to allow a whole new identity to emerge in its place. You may find inspiration in using the analogy of a reptile shedding its skin or a bird molting; in order to make way for your new skin to emerge. For example, you can keep a bird feather or some other symbol of transformation as a reminder of your molting or shedding your previous persona and reminding yourself that as soon as the old slips away; the rebirth is simply nature’s way of evolving.
You need to surrender to this process, letting go of your past Self with great love and gratitude. You can thank your Self for being brilliant to give your Self exactly what you needed then to carry your Self forward. And you can welcome your new persona with an open mind and heart, ready for the next phase of your evolving life.
Enjoy your evolution.
